Hey Y'all!

Got my BFP on the 19th! I will be 5 weeks along this Wednesday, and when I called to schedule my first OB appointment for this pregnancy I found out that Dr. Clifford Swartzenburg has retired! I went ahead and scheduled the appointment with his younger brother, Edward, but Malachi and I were thinking of maybe just switching places all together.

Malachi was laid off a couple of months ago and we don't have insurance. He is working at Best Buy part time, and really doesn't know when they will put him on fulltime with benefits...so, we are paying out of pocket which pretty much means we can go just about anywhere.

If we go the homebirth route, anyone know of a good backup doctor in the area?

You can make an appt with the homebirth midwives (Emmy or Sherri) and ask them about back up options. Unfortunately the climate in BR doesn't allow much online discussion about *them*. You can usually pay a small fee to see a backup, you are only required to see one twice so this shouldn't break the bank. You will come out ahead paying cash with a midwife....saves money and you get WAY more for your money. I pd cash with both births...hospital with OB cost 7500 homebirth with midwife cost under 4500 (that included all prenatal, labs, backup, the birth, and postpartum)

Congrats! and I will be thinking of you and your family, keep us updated!

Have you checked out LaMoms? It's the Louisiana Medicaid program for the uninsured. If you qualify, the birth is free, as is all prenatal care.

Good luck!

Do not have much time now. Just thought I would give you a heads up.

Unless Edward has changed he is very section prone and for epidurals. He was my doctor for my first child. I read some interviews about birth in some of the local magazines awhile back and he was still touting epidurals and sections.

Thanks Renee for the heads up.

I went ahead and made an appointment with Bethany at Oschner, but there weren't any appointments available until August 5th, SO, I am keeping my appointment with Dr. Edward next week. I know I'll have an ultrasound then, and I don't think I could wait until 10 weeks to find out if there is a heartbeat.

But after this visit with Dr. Edward I will be seeing Bethany.

I am still hoping for a homebirth.

Thanks Ladies!

My ultrasound is tomorrow and I am SOOOO nervous! I am a bit more confident this time that all is well...but that first ultrasound always has me going crazy.

I'll let you all know how it goes tomorrow! My appointment is at 850am!
