This is a video of an elephant giving birth. It would be so much better with more peaceful music and without most of the narration. . . maybe just turn the sound off. Fair warning, it did make me nervous and tear up, but all is okay --remember that.

That was neat! I've never seen an elephant birth before. I got a little choked up too, when the little baby took it first breath finally:)

I caught this a while back...Isaac watched it with me and he was so amazed. When we went to the zoo a while after he was talking about when we came to the elephant exhibit.

It was emotional and very neat how the mother just knew what to do.

We watched this video at my house last thursday after the movie, and I believe it was Kelly that pointed out something really interesting that shed a different light on this video. She said that elephants give birth in a circle of the other females and that they help the laboring mama. I know elephants live in complex social groups, but I wasn't aware of their birthing practice. So, when I saw the video again in this light it made me really sad that the mama was alone and gave me a heightened sense of respect for what she did for her baby. She must have been so scared and was just following her most primal inner self.

I imagine not many of us, if any at all, have been faced with a breech birth alone or had to get our sweet baby breathing. But, I think many of us if not all can relate to birthing in subprime situations and meeting if not rising above the odds. Here's to some amazing mamas!!

EXCELLENT POINT! I had no idea that they did that....yes, so sad she was alone. I heard that some human cultures would send their laboring women to the woods to give birth there and then told to come back when the baby is born... :(
