I will post more information closer to the event. As of now the date and location are set. We will meet at the Holiday Inn South off Airline Hwy in Baton Rouge. The workshop will start at 8am and end at 5pm. Food and Beverage will be catered, no outside food or drink will be allowed. I will post the complete menu when it is confirmed, if you have special dietary needs please contact me PM.
This workshop is designed to educate and inform the general public on how to effectively support a woman through a natural labor and birth. The goal is to have more women able to choose a close friend or family member to attend their birth versus hiring an outside assistant.
Birth is a poignant event in a woman’s life, one in which women should be cared for by those close to them. Sadly however, it is often difficult in our culture to find supportive family and friends to offer adequate support throughout a natural birth. Thus the need for paid doulas and other birth assistants remains strong.
While it is our belief that every woman should have a doula present, a doula should not have to be a certified professional. We maintain that anyone can doula and the most effective doula is one with whom the mother already shares an intimate relationship. There will certainly remain a need for paid doulas and birth assistants; the goal of this workshop is not to eliminate this service but rather to enhance it.
This workshop will not offer certification of any kind and is not for birth professionals, rather it's aim is to educate the general public on how to effectively support a women through pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and breastfeeding. The presenters will range from child birth educators, to mothers, to working doulas. The goal is to offer a variety of perspectives, each presenter offering her own experience and knowledge.
The cost of the workshop covers food, beverage, supplies, and the room fee. As of now the fee is set at $45 per person. The more people who RSVP the more the cost could go down. Registration will be required by July 1st, payment is due upon registration. No refunds will be given after July 7th. (I will make an exception for a mom who goes into labor after the 7th and is not able to attend). Please keep your RSVP accurate and only RSVP yes if you are committed to attend, as your RSVP will effect the cost of the workshop. I will start collecting money for the workshop after the 12th of June, at this time I will confirm the price based on the number of RSVPs. You cannot RSVP maybe for this event. Please check back for more details. If you have any questions email me at [masked]
We still have room for more presenters. Any birth professionals are encouraged to inquire, if you have any experience helping women through pregnancy, birth, postpartum, or in breastfeeding support and would like to share contact Amy Shamburger at [masked]

awesome! i think we can do it! we did a conference together at five months and we survived. the group was far from being natural parenting moms but they were game and tolerant. i'm so excited i can hardly wait!
I certainly understand your hesitation, however most of us are parents and are not bothered by the baby babbling :) the room will be set up classroom style, with tables and chairs. You are more than welcome to setup on an end and utilize the floor space. I doubt it will be much of a distraction to get up and walk around with him from time to time. As for breaks, we will start at 8, break at 10, 12, and 2.
i'm getting a little nervous about bringing my almost 9 month old nursling. he can babble a good bit and fusses if i don't give him enough time to crawl and explore. will we be able to sit on the floor if need be? or will we be given enough breaks so that we can pump and leave babies at home?
I am still working on the agenda....Hopefully tonight it will be done and posted. I have lined up all the speakers, just to give you a glimpse... We have two Midwives (Sherri and Lynette), (Doulas, CBE's, and advocates) Jackie, Kira, Heidi Rau, Addy, Luella, Jenny, Rene', (LLL leader) Karen Z, (Nurses) Rebecca, (still waiting on one more to confirm). And we have four mothers coming to share their stories representing hospital birth, homebirth, and UC.
I am finalizing the agenda and the list of speakers. I hope to have this posted by the end of this coming week. Please get your RSVP in as soon as possible. Although prompt payment is appreciated as long as you are paid before the 1st we are good. I need to get a good head count as early as possible. Thanks!
