Preserving Normal Birth IV
TARGET AUDIENCE
This program is designed for health care professionals
who provide the specialty of mother-baby services. The
content is appropriate and of interest to registered nurses,
nurse practitioners, midwives, childbirth educators,
doulas, lactation specialists and physicians.
GOAL OF THE PROGRAM
Our goal is to provide the practitioner with information
that will reduce the high incidence of pharmacological
and surgical interventions used in childbirth and achieve
increased rates of satisfaction with labor and birth
experiences.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this program the participant will be
able to:
1. Discuss the process of giving birth in an
American hospital as a cultural experience.
2. Identify reasons for high infant and fetal
mortality rates in Louisiana.
3. Promote the utilization of midwives to improve
birth outcomes and statistics.
4. List three techniques to support women in labor.
5. Describe the current state of breastfeeding in
Louisiana and evidence-based strategies for
improving breastfeeding rates.
6. Discuss two birth models that have proven
efficacy.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The fourth year of the conference seeks to continue
and expand on our stated goal. Robbie Davis-Floyd, a
nationally recognized author, leader in maternal-child care
and anthropologist will help us assess the health care of
mothers and babies from a social and systems approach.
Joan Conway will discuss the state-of-the-state in a review
of Louisiana’s fetal and infant mortality rates and explore
the ‘whys’ of these statistics.
A panel moderated by Kathy Acree-Speyrer will chronicle the midwife’s contribution to better birthing experiences, and Helen Hurst and Laura Martien will demonstrate and provide practical tips for labor support.
Marci Brewer of the Louisiana Maternal and Child Health Coalition will tell us where we are with breastfeeding and how we can help improve our statistics.
To complete the day, Ms. Davis-Floyd will explore models for practice that have proven successful and ask the audience to reflect on how they will take what they have learned and improve mother-baby care.
