Anyone have any info on safety of using gentian violet DURING pregnancy vs. monistat or diflucan? My dr. seemed fine with it, but I want to be sure. NOT wanting to take diflucan while pregnant (or really at all!).

I honestly can't say I know the answer, but from other drugs I've researched the baby actually gets more of the drug breastfeeding than in utero. So, if its "safe" during breastfeeding, I would imagine it would be fine during pregnancy, especially if it is topical. I am sure there are exceptions.
When I was pregnant with #1 I had a horrible fungal infection all over my body (caught it from the cat...thanks). I ended up going with a topical medicine (everything natural failed, trust me I tried everything) because it spread everywhere. I am going to be honest here and say it was a class "c" drug (gasp, yes, I did it). It was classified C b/c it a topical medicine given orally to rats. So, if I would have downed the tube in my mouth I would have been in trouble, but since it was a topical med.... through all of my research I found that it only penetrated two layers of skin and it very very very rarely got deep enough to get into my system. Then, if it did, it was less than 1% of the drug. And then even less of it was excreted through the urine. Anyway, point being....your skin is a GREAT organ. Look into it a little more, but I bet it would be okay. Maybe you could look at how much is absorbed into the skin, and how deep. Jennyb |

OH - should have added that my dad is a doc and he helped me look into it. He said always do all you can to not take anything oral during pregnancy.... topical is usually always better. He told me he wouldn't want to give his pregnant daughter any of that stuff!
Have you looked up the method of how the drug works? When I looked up mine it said something about genetically destroying developing cell walls, and that it could do it in plants too...I mean, how would a drug distinguish between destroying a plant cell or human cell? Call Emmy Trammell, CPM, LPM.
She's very knowledgeable about and comfortable with using and recommending herbs and homeopathics. I would say yes, it is safe. There is a book called Prescription for Nutritional Healing, you can browse it free at Whole Foods, great resource and should list the safety. Also should be listed on the bottle of Gentian Violet. |
